How to Get the Transcript of a YouTube Short
YouTube Shorts are fast, vertical and full of quotable lines, but the Shorts player has no “Show transcript” button. The captions are still there behind the scenes. This guide shows how to pull the full transcript of any Short in a few seconds, whether you are on a laptop or a phone.
Why Shorts don’t show a transcript
On regular videos, YouTube puts a Show transcript button in the description. The Shorts player is built for swiping, not reading, so that button is missing. YouTube still creates captions for most Shorts, either uploaded by the creator or generated automatically by speech recognition. Those captions are what a transcript is made from, so you only need a way to read them.
Method 1: Use a transcript generator (fastest)
- Open the Short and tap Share → Copy link. The link looks like
youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID. - Paste it into our free YouTube Video Transcript Generator. Pasting a link starts the transcript automatically.
- Read the transcript next to the video. Press play and each line lights up as it is spoken.
- Press Copy for the whole text, or use the copy icon beside a single line.
This works the same in a mobile browser, so you can grab the text of a Short without installing anything.
Method 2: Open the Short as a normal video
Every Short is also a regular YouTube video. On a computer, change /shorts/ in the address bar to /watch?v= and press Enter. The Short opens in the standard player, where you can expand the description and click Show transcript if YouTube offers it for that video.
This method depends on YouTube showing the button, which it does not always do for very short clips. Method 1 reads the captions directly, so it works in more cases.
What you can do with a Short’s transcript
- Quote it accurately. Shorts move quickly; text lets you copy the exact words instead of rewinding five times.
- Repurpose your own Shorts. Turn a series of Shorts into a thread, a newsletter section or a blog post. See how to turn a video into a blog post.
- Study a format that works. Reading the scripts of popular Shorts shows how they hook viewers in the first two seconds and how fast they move.
- Add captions elsewhere. Download the SRT and reuse it when you post the same clip to another platform.
When a Short has no transcript
- Music-only or no speech. If nobody talks, there is nothing to caption.
- Just uploaded. Automatic captions can take a while to appear on new uploads. Try again later.
- Captions turned off. Some creators disable captions. Without them, no tool can read a transcript.
- Heavy background music. Speech recognition may skip parts it cannot hear clearly.

Tips for cleaner Shorts transcripts
- Switch to Paragraphs view. Shorts captions are split into very short lines, and paragraphs read much more naturally.
- Turn timestamps off before copying if you only need the words.
- Check names and slang. Auto-generated captions often misspell usernames, brand names and new slang.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a transcript of a YouTube Short on my phone?
Yes. Copy the Short’s link from the Share menu, open our transcript generator in your phone’s browser and paste it. The transcript appears with a copy button.
Why is there no Show transcript button on Shorts?
The Shorts player is designed for swiping and does not include the transcript panel. The captions still exist, so a transcript tool can read them.
Are Shorts transcripts accurate?
They are as accurate as the captions. Creator-uploaded captions are usually precise; auto-generated ones can miss names, slang and words spoken over music.
