YouTube Transcript Not Showing? 8 Reasons and How to Fix Them
You open a video, expand the description, and the “Show transcript” button simply isn’t there — or a transcript tool tells you none is available. Almost every case comes down to one of eight causes. Work through them in order and you’ll usually have the answer in a minute.
1. The video has no captions at all
A transcript is just the video’s captions, so no captions means no transcript. Check by clicking the CC button in the player. If it is greyed out or missing, the video has no caption track. This is common for music videos, videos with very little speech, and some older uploads.
Fix: nothing you can do on the viewer side except wait or ask the creator to add captions. If it’s your own video, upload captions in YouTube Studio.
2. The video is brand new
Automatic captions are generated after upload, and for long videos that can take a while. Live streams usually get auto-captions after the stream ends and the replay is processed.
Fix: try again later in the day.
3. The creator turned off or removed captions
Creators can unpublish auto-generated captions or delete their uploaded tracks. If that happens, the transcript disappears too.
Fix: none from the viewer side. Look for another upload of the same talk or lecture, for example on the conference’s or university’s own channel.
4. The language isn’t supported for auto-captions
YouTube’s automatic captions support a long list of languages, but not every language or dialect. Videos with heavy background music, multiple people talking at once, or poor audio may also fail to get auto-captions.
Fix: check whether the video has captions in a different language; our YouTube Video Transcript Generator lists every available track in its language menu.
5. You haven’t expanded the description (desktop)
On desktop, the button is hidden at the bottom of the full description. Click …more under the video, scroll to the end, and look for Show transcript.
6. You’re using an older app version or a restricted browser view
Some older app versions, embedded players, and “lite” browsing modes don’t show the transcript option.
Fix: update the YouTube app, or open the video on youtube.com in a regular browser window. Alternatively, paste the link into our transcript generator, which works in any mobile browser.
7. The video is private, members-only or age-restricted
Transcripts for videos that require sign-in, a channel membership, or age verification are not publicly available, so third-party tools can’t retrieve them.
Fix: sign in to YouTube and use the built-in transcript panel if you have access.
8. It’s a premiere or a live stream in progress
Scheduled premieres and live streams don’t have a finished caption track until they end and are processed.
Fix: wait until the replay is available, then try again.
Quick checklist
| Check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Is there a CC button? | No CC = no transcript anywhere |
| Uploaded in the last few hours? | Auto-captions may still be processing |
| Live, premiere or members-only? | Transcript not public yet (or ever) |
| Description fully expanded? | The button lives at the very bottom |
| Other languages in the CC menu? | Pick another track in the language menu |
Still stuck? Try these alternatives
- Search YouTube for the same talk on another channel — official channels often upload better captions.
- Check the video description or the creator’s website; some creators publish full transcripts or show notes.
- If it’s your own video, upload an SRT file or type captions in YouTube Studio. Our guide on SRT subtitle files explains the format.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does YouTube say no transcript is available?
The video either has no captions, its auto-captions are still processing, the creator disabled them, or the video is private, age-restricted or still live.
Can a transcript generator create a transcript when YouTube has none?
A caption-based generator cannot. It shows the captions that exist. To transcribe a video with no captions you would need a speech-to-text tool and the rights to the audio.
How long do YouTube auto-captions take to appear?
It varies with video length and demand. Short videos may get captions quickly; long videos can take several hours.
